All the Types of Alcoholic Drinks You Wanted to Know About

A promotion? A picnic? A proposal? Whatever it is, we've got you covered. It can be hard to narrow down what to drink for a special occasion when there are so many options on the market nowadays, but our team here at Ohza is here to help.

Whatever the celebration may be, we have put together a list for you about the ins and outs of alcohol and what we recommend for your next get-together. We like to find any reason to pop open a bottle (or a can, as the case may be) to celebrate, so here are some of our favorite adult beverages worth celebrating. Cheers!

What Kinds of Alcohol Are There

To kick off our list, we have to give a shout-out to the OGs—aka the drinks that came before distillation.

A fun fact about fermented alcohol: fermented beverages won’t exceed 15% alcohol without being modified in some way. That means that if you’re looking for something with a bit more booze, this might not be what you’re looking for.

There are three main kinds of fermented beverages that we’re going to touch on:

  • Beer
  • Wine
  • Cider

Beer

Beer is fermented using cereal grain, often wheat or barley. A worldwide favorite that’s been around for centuries, beer is one of the world's go-tos for adult beverages.

There are seven main types of beer:

  • Ales
  • Porter
  • Stout
  • Wheat Beer
  • Sour Ale
  • Pilsner
  • Lager

Wine

Wine comes from fermented grapes, and there are tons of varieties. There’s so much to learn about wine, but we’ve got the very basics here.

There are four main types of wine:

  • Red Wine
  • White Wine
  • Rosé Wine
  • Sparkling Wine (our fave!)

Speaking of wine, all of our products here at Ohza are made with sparkling wine… so you can get that satisfactory bubbly that you deserve!

    Champagne vs. Sparkling Wine

Speaking of our fave, sparkling wine… What is the difference between Champagne and sparkling wine? Aren't they the same thing?

    Not quite.

Fun Fact: Champagne is actually the name of the region in France. All Champagnes are sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is Champagne. The main difference is not only the location, but the kind of grapes that are grown there and the precise methods used in that wine region.

Now, is one better than the other? Not necessarily. It really depends on your personal preference. Winemaking is an art practiced all over the world. Depending on the location, you’ll find distinctions in methods, bubbliness, and overall flavor, which is why Champagne is so unique.

Despite being so similar, the price difference between Champagne and sparkling wines can be vast. Generally speaking, sparkling wines are more affordable than an average Champagne.

    Ciders

Lastly, we have ciders. Ciders are a little bit of a wild card. They can be made from multiple kinds of fruits, including pears and apples, in contrast to beers and wines that generally stick to one element, like wheat or grapes. Ciders are often hard to identify by region, unlike their other fermented friends, but they can be bursting with an abundance of fun, unique flavors.

Hard cider usually runs around 5% alcohol content, and they’re a refreshing and delicious alternative to other kinds of fermented beverages.

    Distilled Spirits

Aside from fermented alcohol, we have distilled spirits. These sit at a much higher ABV, and are more commonly used in cocktails and mixed drinks than the fermented beverages above.  You can definitely still drink these straight, but they’ll give you a much stronger bite than the drinks we’ve discussed.

Here are some of the most popular distilled spirits:

    • Vodka
    • Whiskey
    • Gin
    • Rum
    • Tequila
    • Bourbon

    Liqueurs

The official US definition of a liqueur is that alcohol must be mixed with plant products and sweeteners to at least 2.5% by weight. Basically, the defining characteristic of a liqueur is that it is flavored in some way. Flavored liqueurs are one of the best ways to spice up your favorite drink, and they can add a fun, new kick to an otherwise stale combination.

Here are some of our go-to liqueurs for any occasion or season.

    • Aperol- a sweet Italian liqueur with citrus flavors.
    • Chambord- A black raspberry liqueur.
    • Hpnotiq- a sky blue (and totally hashtag-able) flavored liqueur with mango and passionfruit flavors.

PRO TIP: Pair Chambord with our Classic Bellini for a colorful, delicious raspberry drink.

    Shaken or Stirred?

Now that we have established the basics, let's move onto mixed drinks!

The definition of a “mixed drink” is simply: an alcoholic drink consisting of liquor combined with fruit juice or other ingredients, usually shaken or stirred before serving. Lucky for you, we have mixed drinks that you don't have to worry about making yourself.

    Our recommendations? Mimosas and Bellinis.

    Mimosas

Let's start with the brunch favorite: mimosas! The two main ingredients of a mimosa are juice and sparkling wine—most often orange juice. If you’re feeling fancy, how else can you take this drink to the next level?

Adding a splash of a flavored liqueur can really add that cherry on top.  And speaking of cherries, we recommend garnishing your glass with a piece of fruit for a quick snack and an aesthetic Instagram photo!

    Bellinis

For something a little more on the “delicate” side, we recommend a Bellini. Usually made with Prosecco and a white peach puree, the Bellini is a refreshing pale pink drink that pairs well with any occasion.

And if you don’t feel like mixing up those ingredients, we’ve done it for you! Check out our canned Bellinis (or any of our other delicious Mimosa flavors).

It’s the super-easy sparkling wine cocktail that you’ve been waiting for.

    Events In Action

Still wondering what kind of alcohol to bring to your next cookout or bridal shower? Look no further. Let’s discuss what we recommend for future events and celebrations, so you don't have to show up empty-handed.

    Pool Party

We recommend bringing our Cranberry Mimosas with a Charcuterie board full of seasonal fruits and veggies. It will really make a splash (pun intended).

    Bridal Shower

Get the bride ready to say, “I Do” by  bringing a Peach Bellini paired with some cheese and meats. If you’re vegan, pair these delish drinks with some roasted nuts and dried fruit.

    Bottoms Up

We can all consider ourselves mixologists now, but if you’re feeling a little lazy, we’ve taken care of the hard parts for you. Next time you are going through this list, we recommend starting with one of our mimosas that we offer at Ohza—it’s easy, delicious, and refreshing, so what’s not to love?

Next time you're feeling creative, combine a flavored liqueur with one of our Bellinis or Mimosas to up the fancy factor to the max.  The options really are endless when you are given great tools to start with, and your friends are sure to be impressed.

Whether it's wine, beer, or a cocktail, you can now say that you have everything you need to know about all of your favorite adult beverages. Now that you’ve read your way through this article, it’s time to put that newfound knowledge to practice!

    • Grab some friends and some ingredients, and practice your mixologist skills!
    • Taste test some of your favorite Champagnes and sparkling wines and see if you can tell the difference between them.
    • Plan your next celebration out and see which alcohols you want to try!

We hope that this list (and maybe a can or two of Ohza) will become a go-to for your next event. Carry on with confidence, knowing that you can handle any mixed drink that comes your way. Whatever that event may be, we believe and know that life is worth celebrating… so go grab a cold one and celebrate.
